a french photographer wins prize for pictures of africans in french colonial army



The subject is not new for me, who did work for many years on colonial representations. But this Philippe Guionie did an impressive job on capturing the memory of African fighters not recognized by France till recently - well it is easier now they almost all dead !

I find this work quite simple and showing how far these guys are from Honor and Glory.

I remember working in 1999 in Senegal with a famous french writer - Eric Orsena - as a TV producer to do a french movie about "ancient combattant" - and organising the interview of a centenarians - Abdoulaye Ndiaye - who died the day before the big show planned by the French embassy for him.

The only thing we had from it, was his fresh grave...
